Don’t laugh! This “durian” award (a trophy that looks like a durian!) is back for the fifth year. The AYA Awards strive to build tomorrow’s leaders and create a better future. And the 2009 finalist has finally been announced! The public can start voting for 2 categories – Most Outstanding Youth and Youth Friendly Company of the Year – from now to November 2nd.
The Most Outstanding Youth award recognizes the exceptional spirit of young Malaysians who have overcome obstacles till today. The finalists for this category are:
Finalist Number 1: Edana Lim Parina
Growing up in a broken family, she overcame much hurt, including a drug addiction and today owns a fashion chain that provide jobs to single moms and other women from backgrounds similar to hers.
Finalist Number 2: Ellynita Hazlina Lamin
Overcoming her abusive childhood to start a social enterprise that focuses on crisis relief work in Acheh, she continues to encourage young people to help others, despite having cancer herself.
Finalist Number 3: Jecyrina Nagarajah
After being exposed to the plight of autistic children while running for Miss Malaysia/World, she gave up pursuing her runway dreams and dedicated her life towards educating special needs children.
Finalist Number 4: Yeoh Chen Chow
A government scholar and Ivy League graduate, he gave up dreams of chasing millions to work for JobStreet, helping people find employment. After hours he runs free education clinics that help students apply for scholarships.
Whereas, the Youth Friendly Company of the Year recognizes companies that are enthusiastically investing in the youth today. And the finalists are:
Finalist Number 1: AFS Malaysia
AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organisation that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.
Finalist Number 2: Leaderonomics
A social enterprise niched in the field of leadership, Leaderonomics offers a full range of solutions and services for organisations, and individuals of all ages. Its vision is to seek to grow people into leaders, build affectionate communities, and transform human societies by training corporations and youths.
Finalist Number 3: Theatre for Young People (T4YP)
T4YP aims to inspire and nurture imagination, confidence and creativity in young Malaysians through theatre as young people are the future of Malaysian Theatre. Under the auspices of The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), the T4YP young people’s theatre programme provides a platform for young people between the ages of 16 to 25 the opportunity to express themselves by creating meaningful theatre.
