Face Your Fears

During the month when we sit down and pretend to discuss the contents of our upcoming issue of MYC!, we weirdos discovered that phobias are a pretty cool thing to learn, and we’re not talking about the common Agoraphobia or Claustrophobia, but the unusual ones that caught our attention! For one, we discovered that ALL of us have a phobia for deadlines, but seriously guys… looks like it’s a pattern when you use a standard text to fit any phobia and reuse it for all unusual phobias by merely changing the name, which we discovered can lead to bizarre results!

1. Nomophobia

Fear of being out of mobile contact (Ellyse has this...)

2. Tetraphobia

Fear of the number 4 (I’ll bet the one who thought this up was a Chinese)

3. Arachnophobia

Fear of sspiders (Eight legged freaks are our friends…with killing intentions)

4. Photophobia

Fear of sunlight (statistics show that majority of this people group consists of the undead, i.e. vampires)

5. Paraskavedekatriaphobia

Fear of Friday the 13^th (I think I’m developing a phobia on how to pronounce this)

6. Erotophobia

Fear of sexual love (looks like family planning will no longer be a problem)

7. Ombrophobia

Fear of rain (looks like there’ll be no more singing in the rain)

8. Claustrophobia

Fear of confined spaces (like coffins and Hani’s car)

9. Hemophobia

Fear of blood (something to watch out for when you’re choosing doctors)

10. Gynophobia

Fear of women (I’m sure every guy has experienced this before)

Here are some fictional ones!

Aibohphobia

Fear of palindromes (a poke at the phobia ‘cause it’s a palindrome itself (something spelt the same backwards and forwards), taken form the book “The Devil’s DP Dictionary”)

Anachrophobia

Fear of spiders wearing anoraks (what? We KNOW!  It’s used in Wallace and Gromit’s comic book called “Anoraknophobia”)

Arachibutyrophobia

Fear of peanut buttter stuck on the roof of the mouth (it’s getting more and more ridiculous, huh? It’s used in one of the old comics of Modesty Blaise, called “Dead Man’s Handle”)

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

Fear of long words (yes, this WE have! Derived from “Hippopotamus”, shows the fear of words of Monstrous Hippo proportions. If you can pronounce this, email us at mycnews@myc.com.my, and we’ll give you free movie tickets ^_^)

Transformophobia

Fear of Transformers (‘cause EVERYONE has their ringtone, and we’re sick of hearing it every time the phone rings, and we don’t know whose phone is it)

Ingrownailophobia

Fear of ingrown nails (something we all should be wary of)

Shoewithdrawophobia

Fear of not having enough money to buy more shoes (usually hits MYC! Female staff by the end of the month when our wages run out, and they can’t buy more shoes)

Deadlinophobia

Fear of deadlines (since we spent too much time reading comics at the office, we fear deadlines more than ever, ‘cause it means we actually have to do REAL WORK!)

Our first impression of this typical college girl Ninie was that she was bursting with energy, excited about life and definitely having fun! This month, our CAMPUS ISSUE talks to Ninie Marlyne, who tells us why being a college student is the best time you’ll ever have…

Hello Ninie, so tell us about yourself, and why somehow we keep thinking that you look so darn familiar?

Awww, you’re far too kind. I’m just a regular college student, and I love being in college and being able to live my life to the fullest right now. My time is right here, right now. I’m currently studying in FMM Institute, doing Logistics, and I guess you think I’m familiar ‘cause I also moonlight as a TVC and Print Ad talent. I was in the Celcom “Will You Marry Me” ad, Tourism Malaysia with MYC!’s cover boy for March (omg! He’s so darn cute), Estee Lauder model search, and many others.

So how does it feel to be on the front cover of MYC!, where college students and young adults will get to see who the real Ninie is?

It feels great! I’ve always read your mag, and it’s great that I get to be watched (maybe ogled?) by college kids all over Malaysia! Thank for having me, guys.

It’s our pleasure. But Ninie, you’re going places, and you’re becoming more famous. Have you ever thought of just going one way and maybe forget college?

No way, I think a person’s attraction is both physical and mental. Wits and brains are part of my package, and I think that a person who solely relies on looks only will not go far in life. My parents have taught me that it’s important to get and education and prove to myself that I can go even further then where I’ve been.

So what do you think is the biggest misconception about college students?

I think people always think that we’re naïve and immature, and that we’re commitment-free and we’re too busy having fun and all. Well, news flash people. I guess we are having loads of fun, but we’re also learning responsibilities and I know that sometimes we do make mistakes and all, but at least we’re trying to grow up here *grin*

What is it that makes you not want to leave the college life?

I don’t’ wanna grow up *laughs*. When I leave college, I think it’s time that I stop having fun and I’ll have to be an adult now. Plus, I’ll have to leave my friends and my life will no longer be so fun and flexible. All work, less play. Plus, my parents won’t give me allowance anymore *smile*

Any plans of what you’ll do after you graduate?

I think I’ll keep on modeling ‘cause it’s fun, but I wanna continue my career in logistics too, so as long as I can, I’ll try to do a little of both. I don’t know how long that’ll last, but I’ll definitely give my 110%.

What do you think all college kids like you should do to stay healthy and wholesome?

I think our peers play an important role, so it’s essential that you choose your ‘peeps’ properly and not make the wrong choices. Live life to the fullest, and keep yourself healthy. I myself always eat healthily and I’ll do a couple of sit-ups and jog a little, though I totally hate gyms.

So during exams, how do you de-stress and what’s your secret recipe for good memory?

I de-stress by singing loudly and having a rave party in my car. Sorry, I don’t go clubbing, but this is what I usually do. I keep a stash of raisins to help my memory, but I think it’s best that we all start preparing for exams early so we don’t have to worry too much later.

What about relationships during college. What do you think of them?

I think if you’re mature enough and it doesn’t’ distract your studies, then by all means, give yourself a chance at romance! Of course, I’d think that we shouldn’t be too serious either, maybe just puppy love and all…unless the guy you’re dating is more mature and not in the college.

Ok, last question. If Ninie can be described as a song, what song will you be?

I’d definitely be Lady Gaga’s Poker Face! I love that song! Woohoo!
